It’s Okay to Use Email If Needed

If you find yourself easily backtracking on the phone, or if text messaging leads to heated threads, email can be a nice substitute. It gives you time to compose your thoughts and lends itself to a more measured response.

Some of my favorite scripts for saying no and making requests are on the next pages. I consider it a productive week when I have used one of them at least three times.

“I wish I could swing it, but I’m swamped. Can we check in next month?”

“I appreciate you thinking of me for this role, but I’m prioritizing ______ at the moment. I’d be happy to consider this next year.”

“My schedule has changed. Can we please reschedule this meeting for ______?”

“I’ll need your help with ______. Can you please be home by ______ tonight?”

“No, I’m not free to talk right now.”

“I notice that ______ isn’t working. Can we set aside some time to discuss it?”
